Research Elective Policy for Undergraduate Students Queens Medical College Kasur (QMCK)

1. Introduction

Research is a fundamental component of medical education at QMCK. To foster a culture of scientific inquiry and evidence-based medicine, QMCK has instituted a structured Research elective Program for MBBS students. This program aims to equip students with skills in research methodology, critical thinking, literature review, and scientific writing

2. Objectives of Research Electives

To expose students to the principles and practices of biomedical research. To promote a research-oriented mindset among undergraduate medical students. To develop competence in identifying research problems, formulating hypotheses, and designing basic research projects. To prepare students for national and international presentations and publications

3. Eligibility Criteria

  • All students from 3rd Year MBBS onwards are eligible to apply.
  • Students must have cleared all previous professional exams.
  • Good academic standing and regular attendance me mandatory.
  • Basic knowledge of research methodology is preferred.

4. Structure of the Elective

  • Component Details
  • Duration 4-8 weeks (during summer/winter breaks)
  • Credit Hours: Optional/Non-credit (UHS elective)
  • Mode In-person/Online/Hybrid
  • Supervision Internal faculty/External supervisors approved by Research Committee
  • Output Research abstract, poster, paper draft or submission to a journal

Students may choose from the following research domains:

  • Clinical Medicine
  • Public Health/Community Medicine
  • Medical Education
  • Bioethics
  • Health Systems and Policy

6. Application and Approval Process

Call for Applications will be announced by the Office of Research in each semester. Interested students must submit

  • Research Elective Application Form
  • Brief Research Proposal
  • CV (if applying for external electives)
  • Applications will be reviewed by the Institutional Research Elective Committee (IREC)
  • Upon approval, a faculty supervisor will be assigned

7. Supervision & Mentorship

  • Each student of group of students will work under the direct supervision of a QMCK faculty member, or in approved external institutions.
  • Supervisors must guide in research protocol development, data collection, analysis, and manuscript writing.
  • Progress will be documented via periodic logbooks and review meetings

8. Assessment & Certification

  • A final research report or presentation is required
  • A certificate of completion will be issued upon
  • Submission of a project report
  • Completion of feedback form
  • Satisfactory supervisor evaluation
  • Students may also be awarded certificates for:
  • Best Poster/Abstract
  • Joumal Publication
  • International Presentation

9. Funding and Support

  • Limited internal funding may be available through the QMCK Research Fund.
  • Students are encouraged to apply for external student research grants (eg, HEC, UHS)
  • Guidance for manuscript submission and conference abstracts will be provided.

10. Code of Conduct & Ethics

  • All students must follow the QMCK Research Ethics Guidelines
  • Projects involving human or animal data require Institutional Ethical Review Board (IERS) approval
  • Plagiariom will lend to disqualification and disciplinary action

11. Policy Review

This policy will be reviewed every two years by the Research and Academic Council of QMCK of earlier if needed
